Reads all the text
Word for word, in reading order. For a recipe you are cooking, a book page or anything where every detail counts.
Left button, or tap the left half of the screen.
For blind and low-vision people
Point your iPhone at a letter, a medicine package or a menu, then tap. WYSIWYH tells you what matters, or reads every word.
Free for iPhone with iOS 17 or later. No account needed.
How it works
Open the app and hold your iPhone over the text, about a hand's width away. On iPhones with a macro camera it even reads small print up close. Too dark? Turn on the flashlight.
Tap Key info or Every word, or anywhere on the left or right half of the screen. While the text is being analyzed, your iPhone gives a short vibration every two seconds, so you know it is still working.
The text is read aloud. Tap again to stop, or use Repeat to hear it once more. The text also appears on screen in large print.
Accessibility first
WYSIWYH is built around how blind and low-vision people actually use an iPhone.
Two buttons fill the bottom of the screen in black on yellow and white. While it reads, they turn into one big red Stop button.
Every control has a clear label and hint, and the camera view is kept out of the way of VoiceOver.
A tap when it starts, a pulse every two seconds while it thinks, and a different feel when text is found or nothing is there.
Speech plays even when your ringer is switched off, and other audio gets quieter while it speaks.
Turn on the flashlight with one tap. On Pro iPhones the camera switches to macro automatically for small print.
Missed something? One tap repeats the last text, without taking a new photo.
Your language, your voice
Pick your language once. WYSIWYH reads everything in that language and translates text written in another one, so a French menu or an English leaflet becomes easy to follow.
Bring your own OpenAI API key for even more accurate reading and remarkably natural voices. Choose a voice and speed, and describe how it should sound:
Or write your own, like “a warm, cheerful voice with a slight smile.”
Privacy
Text recognition, summaries (with Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones) and speech all run on your iPhone. Photos are not saved. No account, no analytics, no ads, no tracking.
Photos go to OpenAI only if you add your own key and switch on “Send photos to OpenAI”. They are never sent to us. Read the privacy policy.
Support
The app is free. If you choose to use OpenAI, its usage is billed by OpenAI to your own account, usually a fraction of a cent per reading.
Any iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Key info summaries on the device need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro or newer) with Apple Intelligence turned on. On other iPhones, add an OpenAI key for summaries.
Yes. Without an OpenAI key, everything runs on your iPhone, including in flight mode.
Your iPhone could not create a summary. Usually Apple Intelligence is turned off or not available. Turn it on in Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri, or add an OpenAI key in the app's settings. Every word always reads all the text.
Create an API key at platform.openai.com, then open Settings in WYSIWYH (the gear at the top left), paste the key and switch on “Send photos to OpenAI”. Voice, speed and speaking style then appear in Settings. The key is stored in your iPhone's Keychain and is only ever sent to OpenAI.
Download an Enhanced or Premium voice in your iPhone's Settings › Accessibility › Read & Speak › Voices. Then choose it in WYSIWYH under Settings › System voice.
Hold the iPhone a little further away so the whole text is in view, and make sure there is enough light. The flashlight button at the top right helps. Glossy paper can reflect light, so try tilting the page slightly.
Text recognition and summaries are very good, but not perfect. For anything important, like medicine doses or amounts to pay, use Every word to double-check, or ask someone you trust.
We read every message and usually answer within a few days.
